We spent the first two nights in Flagstaff. We went to Wupatki National
Monument, Sunset Crater and Walnut Canyon National Monument on Wednesday. On
Thursday we moved east on I40 and started at Meteor Crater (not cheap to stare
at a hole!). Next we stopped at the Homolovi Ruins, then moved on through
Winslow and Holbrook. We drove through the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest
(very windy and rainy!). We went back to Holbrook for the night and then went
north on 191 Friday. Our first stop was the Hubbell Trading Post (not very
exciting and the Navajo rugs were VERY expensive!). From there we went to
Canyon De Chelly, which was really beautiful. Next we took 59 which was a
Navajo Highway to Kayenta, stopping at the Navajo National Monument. From
there we headed north on 98 to Page. We stopped in Page for the night and
started at the Glen Canyon Dam the next morning. From Page we continued
Saturday on 89 to the Grand Staircase Escalante, through Kanab and continued on
to Zion National Park in Utah. This was my favorite part of the trip! We
lucked out and got a room at the Zion Lodge in the canyon.. We spent some time
in Springdale just outside of the canyon too. On Sunday we made our way on 89
around the other side so we could enjoy the Vermillion Cliffs and also stopped
at Pipe Springs National Monument. We really saw a lot more than we ever
thought we would cover in five short days!
